Find Free helps friend groups find a time when everyone’s free. To do that, it needs to know when you’re busy. This policy explains what we collect, who can see it, and how long we keep it. “Find Free”, “we” and “us” mean the people who run Find Free, and it covers the Find Free app, its iMessage app, and findfree.app. Questions go to hello@findfree.app.
The short version
- We read when you’re busy. Friends see only busy or free, unless you choose to share more.
- We never sell your data, use it for ads, or use it to train AI models.
- We never see where you are. Check-ins are checked on your phone.
- We only ask Google for read-only access, and you can disconnect any time.
- Delete your account, and your data goes with it.
What we collect
Your account
- Sign in with Apple. Apple gives us an account ID, plus your name and email if you choose to share them. Apple lets you hide your real email.
- Your phone number, which you confirm with a code we text you. We use it to sign you in and so friends who have your number can find you. Other people never see it.
- Your profile: the name you show friends and your time zone. If you want to use the flake jar’s Pay button, you can also add a Venmo username or Cash App $cashtag.
Your calendars
- Which calendars count. You pick which calendars Find Free uses. For each one we keep its name and a category label you choose, like Work or School.
- Busy times. For each event on those calendars, we store when it starts and ends and which calendar it’s on, from 1 day ago to 8 weeks ahead. We don’t collect event descriptions, locations, notes or guest lists.
- Event titles, only if you share full details. Titles are stored only while you’ve given at least one person or group Full details. Otherwise we drop them before they’re saved, and if you stop sharing full details with everyone, we delete the titles we have. Events Google marks as private never keep their title.
- Apple Calendar is read on your phone. The app uploads only each event’s start, end and calendar, plus the title under the full-details rule above.
- Google Calendar is read by our server, with your permission. We keep the email address of the Google account you connect, and a token that lets us check your calendars for changes. Google tells us when something changes, so your free time stays up to date.
Friends, groups and plans
- Contacts. To find friends who use Find Free, the app sends the phone numbers in your contacts to our server, which answers with the ones that belong to Find Free users. We don’t store your contacts. We keep only the friend requests you send and accept.
- What you set up: your friends, your groups and their rules, and the sharing level you pick for each person and group.
- Plans: polls and the times suggested for them, votes, RSVPs, check-ins, and flake jar entries (who owes the group fund, who paid, and what the fund paid for).
- Places you save, found through Apple Maps: a name, an address and its spot on the map. A place you save for yourself, like home, is visible only to you until you use it in a plan or share it with a group.
- iMessage. Find Free can’t read your messages. Apple gives the iMessage app anonymous IDs for the people in a chat, never their names or numbers. Your phone remembers which chat goes with which group.
Location
We never see where you are. Find Free asks for your location only when you tap Check in, and only while you’re using it. Your phone takes one reading, checks whether you’re at the plan’s place, and tells us only that you checked in and when. Your coordinates never leave your phone. If you say no to location, a friend can vouch for you instead.
Your device
A push notification token and the app’s version, so we can send you poll updates and reminders.
If you vote on the web without the app
- The name you type, your vote, and a code saved in your browser that lets you change your vote.
- Your busy times for that poll, if you tap the times you’re free or connect Google to fill them in. They’re used for that poll only and deleted a week after it ends. If you connect Google, we read your calendar once and don’t keep access to it.
This website
findfree.app has no ads and no tracking cookies. Our web host keeps standard server logs, such as IP addresses and browser types, to run and protect the site. We don’t use analytics or crash-reporting tools yet. If we add any, we’ll update this policy first.
How we use it
- To show your friends and groups when you’re free, at the level you choose.
- To suggest the best times for a plan, run the poll, and track who’s coming.
- To send the notifications you’ve turned on, like new polls, locked-in plans and reminders.
- To keep Find Free working and secure, fix problems, and stop abuse.
We don’t sell or rent your data, we don’t use it for ads, and we don’t use it to train AI or machine-learning models.
Who can see what
Only your friends and people you share a group with can see your calendar at all, and only at the level you allow. The default is Busy/free.
| Level | What they see for your 3–4 PM meeting |
|---|---|
| Busy/free | “Busy 3–4 PM” |
| + Category | “Work 3–4 PM”, using the label you gave that calendar |
| Full details | “Team meeting 3–4 PM” |
- A level you set for a person always wins. Everyone else gets the most generous level that applies to them: your default level, if they’re a friend, or the level you picked for a group you’re both in.
- Polls only use busy or free. They can say who’s busy, never why.
- You can hide calendars, change levels, or pause sharing at any time. While paused, everyone sees you as “unknown”.
- Members of your groups see your name, and your votes, RSVPs, check-ins and flake jar entries in that group.
- Anyone with a poll’s link can see its times and the names of the people who voted, so share links only with your group.
Google user data
If you connect Google Calendar, Find Free asks Google for read-only access to:
- your Google account’s email address, so you can see which account is connected;
- your list of calendars, so you can pick which ones count;
- your events, to work out when you’re busy.
We use this data only to show when you’re busy to the people you choose, at the level you choose, and to suggest times for your plans. We store only what’s described above: start and end times, which calendar an event is on, and titles only under the full-details rule. We never change your Google Calendar. Plans you lock in are added to your calendar by the app on your phone.
We don’t transfer Google user data to anyone, except as needed to run the features you use, to comply with the law, or as part of a merger or sale of Find Free. No person at Find Free reads it unless you ask us to, it’s needed for security, or the law requires it.
Find Free’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs to any other app will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
You can disconnect Google in the app at any time. We then revoke our access with Google and delete the busy times that came from it. You can also remove Find Free in your Google Account settings. That stops syncing straight away; disconnecting in the app or deleting your account also removes the busy times we already have.
How long we keep it
- Busy times: deleted a day after they end. We never keep more than 1 day back to 8 weeks ahead.
- Event titles: only while you share full details with someone.
- Web voters’ busy times: deleted a week after the poll ends.
- Access to Google: revoked when you disconnect or delete your account.
- Everything else: until you delete it or your account.
Deleted data can stay in our database backups for up to 30 days before it’s gone for good.
Your choices and rights
- Change who sees what, hide calendars or pause sharing at any time in the app.
- Disconnect Google at any time.
- Say no to location. Friends can still vouch for you.
- Turn off notifications in your iPhone’s Settings.
- Delete your account in the app, or by emailing hello@findfree.app. It deletes your profile, calendars, busy times, friends, groups and plans right away, and revokes our access to Google.
- Ask us for a copy of your data, or to correct it, by emailing hello@findfree.app.
Depending on where you live, such as California, the EU or the UK, you may have more rights: to know what we hold about you, get a copy, correct it, delete it, or object to how we use it. Email us to use any of them and we’ll answer within 30 days. We don’t sell or share personal information for advertising, as California law defines those terms.
Security
Data travels over encrypted connections and is stored on encrypted disks. The database itself checks every request, so each person can read only what they’ve been given. Google access tokens are kept in an encrypted vault that only our server can open. No system is perfectly secure, but if a breach affects your data, we’ll tell you.
Your data is stored in the United States. If you use Find Free from elsewhere, it’s transferred there.
Children
Find Free is for people 13 and older. We don’t knowingly collect data from anyone younger. If you think a child under 13 has an account, email hello@findfree.app and we’ll delete it.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy, we’ll post the new version here and update the date at the top. If a change matters, like a new use for your calendar data, we’ll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
